BIO

Part of my job description is well...being a jack of all trades. I am extremely organized, I have to be. The only job I've ever had has been in the Media Industry. I started off as the kid on the Carl Juniors set holding the bucket of hamburgers.

And 20+ years later, I run a Portland Video Production company that works with all different types of clients –– from corporate America, to small businesses, to local nonprofits. I take the upmost pride and privilege in the work I do.

I was trained in old-school Hollywood. Traditional, intense, and most of the time a bit too tough. Because of the importance of molding and changing with the times, I've redone my way of training and mentoring the new generation, and have had success with young professionals working on our sets and at our production company.

CANDIDATE STATEMENT

Why are you interested in serving on OMPA's Board of Directors? What’s your past involvement with OMPA?

I am a Black Filmmaker. I am a small business owner, and I am a collaborator. I have done one job for 22 years, and that is media production and advertising. I have learned skills along the way and collaborated with people from all different backgrounds and experiences.

Media production and filmmaking is at its best when people come together, lead by example, teach, and continue to make sure that this field is a more equitable industry for ALL.

I want to work with a board of professional individuals who gather around the same pillars that OMPA stands for and join in collaboration as we continue to advocate for the profession that we love and have a privilege to work in. My one involvement in the last few years with OMPA has been with the Portland Film Festival. Specifically, we edited footage of Boys & Girls club filmmakers for their submission into the Portland Film Festival.

What is your vision for OMPA and the community at large? How do you see yourself contributing to this vision?

The film and media industry in some ways is stuck in the past. I want to be part of any organization or any initiative that is moving The Agenda forward. An agenda that invites everyone to the table and pulls up a chair, an organization that puts heads together from different walks of life and says how can we make this thing work better for everybody.

BIO & CANDIDATE STATEMENT

  • Owner & Producer at Actual Industries
  • Based in: Portland
  • Pronouns: she/her/hers

BIO

I've spent my entire life in this industry creating other people's messages -- whether it was teaching people to cook, or selling the latest shoe technology. For the past 12 yers, I have worked as a small business owner who has run a production company based in Portland. Before that, I worked for 8 years as a freelance producer and director. I care deeply about creating opportunities for BIPOC and other underrepresented communities who also want to create and use their voices to tell their stories. Individuals who deserve this industry as a career path just as much as anyone else who has had the privilege to consider it. I can offer exactly where I am and who I am right now, mid-career and at a point where perhaps I can bridge old guard and new talent. I have the drive to create opportunities and to create content that represents the experiences of the many, but most importantly those who have not had a voice or power the longest.

CANDIDATE STATEMENT

Why are you interested in serving on OMPA's Board of Directors? What’s your past involvement with OMPA?

I have served one term (2 years) on the OMPA board. During that time, I've served as co-chair of the DEI committee and on the Executive Committee. Were I to be reelected, I would continue to push the evolution of the OMPA. Radical transformation cannot happen by upholding the status quo. Everything about the past two years: a pandemic, a racial justice uprising, attacks on our democracy, social unrest, a burnt out workforce looking for their lives and well-being to come first -- all of this demands a re-examination of industry culture and the practices that perpetuates harm, discrimination, and racism. We can be a community of artists, creatives, technicians, and media professionals who are also activists. Individuals who not only tell stories but who also create the change we want to see in the world.

What is your vision for OMPA and the community at large? How do you see yourself contributing to this vision?

I’ve worked on a variety of sets throughout my career and as a mother, I want the next generation to be able to show up as their whole selves and see that creative careers are possible for them. No role is beyond their reach. There are no glass ceilings they can’t smash through because they are a person of color or they are a women/non-binary person. Systemic inequities and racism need to be part of the conversation every day, in every corner of the industry by every level of worker and professional. We can create community by talking to many, finding those already doing this work and uplift and support their efforts. Redirect the OMPA’s reach and influence to motivate others to take up this work and find change in their part of the industry. The OMPA can affect and effect policy that not only supports the media production industry, but an industry that stands for more than being an economic sector. Many can do this work, it is not unique to me. I’m passionate about these issues and will do this work inside and outside of the OMPA. My hope is to start these conversations in as many spaces as I can and inspire others to take up this change however they can as well.
